ABOUT THIS TRAIL

A True Arizona
Bucket-List Hike

For the definitive tour of Chiricahua National Monument, the “Big Loop” stands as the crown jewel of the trail system. This grand circuit is not a single path but a strenuous, full-day adventure forged by linking several iconic trails, including Echo Canyon and the Heart of Rocks Loop. It offers a complete immersion into the geological heart of this famed “Wonderland of Rocks.” The epic 9.5-mile trek involves over 1,800 feet of elevation change and demands excellent fitness. The journey typically begins with a descent through Echo Canyon’s narrow corridors of towering rhyolite hoodoos. This leads to the famed Heart of Rocks Loop, the park’s centerpiece—a concentrated spectacle of bizarre and beautiful named formations like “Thor’s Hammer” and the “Pinnacle Balanced Rock.” The return journey is a steady, demanding climb out of the canyon basin via the Sarah Deming trail. The reward for this challenging hike is not a singular summit vista but the profound experience of spending a day completely enveloped by one of the planet’s most unique landscapes. Reserved for well-prepared hikers, the Big Loop is the quintessential Chiricahua challenge, offering the most intimate portrait of the mountain’s volcanic soul and an immense sense of accomplishment.

The Soul Searcher

The Soul Searcher – An intentional test of rhythm, focus, and mental persistence. Hikers encounter the quiet internal dialogue that comes with elevated heart rates and battling through “false summits,” requiring mental determination without crossing into total exhaustion or severe technical exposure.

THE VIBE

Challenging. This is where the “Type 2” truly begins. Expect heavy breathing, limited conversation, and a lot of focus on your footwork.

THE MOMENT OF DOUBT

Occurs when you see a “false summit” and realize you still have 600 feet of vertical to go. You will briefly consider sitting on a rock and waiting for the group to come back down.

THE PAYOFF

The views are significantly better because 90% of tourists gave up three miles ago. That first cold drink afterward will be the best thing you’ve ever tasted.

TYPICAL TERRAIN

Steep switchbacks, loose “scree” (sliding rocks), and perhaps a bit of light scrambling.
