ABOUT THIS TRAIL

A True Arizona
Bucket-List Hike

Located in Mesa’s Usery Mountain Regional Park, the Pass Mountain Trail loop is a substantial desert challenge, offering a full-circle journey around a local landmark. This rewarding circuit provides a constantly evolving landscape, contrasting rugged ascents with city views against the serene solitude of the mountain’s quiet backside. The 7.5-mile loop gains roughly 1,100 feet and is a true test of endurance. Tackling it counter-clockwise, the hike begins with its primary challenge: a rocky western ascent where the sprawling Phoenix metro area unfolds behind you. Upon reaching the pass, the perspective dramatically shifts. The city disappears, replaced by a wild, captivating vista of the Goldfield and Superstition Mountains to the east. The eastern half of the loop offers a completely different character, featuring a longer, more gradual descent through quiet washes that fosters a sense of peaceful isolation. Finishing the loop provides a unique sense of accomplishment. It’s a comprehensive tour of the boundary where Mesa’s city limits meet the untamed Sonoran wilderness, allowing hikers to experience the beauty of both worlds on a single, rewarding trail.

THE PAYOFF

You’re back at the truck in time for a late lunch, feeling accomplished but still able to walk the next morning.

TYPICAL TERRAIN

Well-defined trails with some rocky sections and manageable elevation.
