ABOUT THIS TRAIL

A True Arizona
Bucket-List Hike

The Hawes Trail System in East Mesa offers a sprawling playground of interconnected trails for an immersive Sonoran Desert experience without the grueling climbs of nearby peaks. Nestled between the iconic Red Mountain and the rugged Goldfield Mountains, this beloved network provides an adventure as challenging or as gentle as you choose to make it. Unlike a singular summit push, Hawes is a web of flowing singletrack where the challenge is measured by distance across undulating terrain. The trails meander through dense saguaro forests and classic desert flora. While lower loops offer a gentle introduction, the system’s true reward is found by ascending the low ridges on trails like Twisted Sister, which unlocks breathtaking panoramic views. From these vantage points, the vistas are among the best in the East Valley. To the west, Red Mountain dominates the skyline, often framed by the Salt River. To the east, the jagged peaks of the Superstition Mountains create a dramatic backdrop, especially at sunrise or sunset. Whether you seek a vigorous training hike or a peaceful walk, the Hawes Trail System is a cherished local gem that offers a customizable and deeply rewarding desert adventure.
