ABOUT THIS TRAIL
A True Arizona
Bucket-List Hike
For a unique Arizona adventure, the hike to Massacre Falls in the Superstition Mountains offers the rare magic of a desert waterfall. The key to this hike is timing, as the falls are an ephemeral treasure that only flows after significant rainfall, making late winter or the end of the summer monsoon season the ideal time to visit. The journey is a moderate 5.5-mile out-and-back trek with an elevation gain of around 1,100 feet. The trail begins in a sandy wash, winding through a classic Sonoran landscape of saguaros and palo verde trees. It gradually ascends and becomes rockier as it enters a narrowing canyon, building anticipation for the destination. The final push leads to a rocky basin where the reward suddenly appears: a beautiful cascade of water plunging down a sheer cliff face. In a land defined by its dryness, the sight and sound of the falls create a stunning oasis. For hikers who plan their trip according to recent weather, Massacre Falls provides an unforgettable experience, showcasing a fleeting moment of life-giving beauty in a rugged and storied landscape.
