ABOUT THIS TRAIL
A True Arizona
Bucket-List Hike
The Boulder Canyon Trail to the Canyon Viewpoint is a challenging Superstition Wilderness introduction, providing a swift, steep ascent that rewards hikers not only with commanding views of the jagged peaks but also with stunning, watery vistas of Canyon Lake. This trek challenges with rocky, uneven terrain and a steady climb, delivering spectacular rewards. The 5-mile out-and-back trail gains a formidable 1,100 feet of elevation. It begins immediately at the trailhead with its main challenge: a steady, calf-burning climb up the initial ridge on a rocky, rough path. This section is unforgiving, offering little shade as it ascends. After cresting the first ridge, the trail rolls across hillsides, providing brief respites before demanding another climb. The final push requires persistence over the rocky, sometimes slippery terrain as the trail winds toward the best vantage point. Your reward for the challenging effort is a breathtaking, elevated overlook—the designated viewpoint. The unobstructed panoramic views are spectacular, first sweeping down onto the turquoise waters of Canyon Lake and the winding Apache Trail. The main focus, however, is the interior of the wilderness, encompassing iconic formations like Battleship Mountain and the legendary spire of Weaver’s Needle nestled deep within the vast Superstition range. For well-prepared hikers, conquering the Boulder Canyon Viewpoint is an unforgettable achievement that tests leg strength and delivers an unparalleled dual perspective on the wild desert mountains and the stunning reservoir below.
