Understanding Types of Fun

In the outdoor world, we measure experiences by how they feel in the moment versus how we remember them later.

Type 1 Fun

Pure Enjoyment

Fun while it’s happening. Think: floating down a lazy river, scenic drives, easy sunset strolls.

It’s pleasant in the moment and pleasant to remember. No suffering required.

“That was great!” — said both during and after.

Type 2 Fun

Challenging Now, Legendary Later

Can be challenging, sometimes difficult and maybe even a little miserable in the moment, but incredibly rewarding and fun in retrospect. These experiences make great stories to tell and lead to the best views.

Think, that brutal summit push, the unexpected rainstorm and legs burning from the climb but seeing the viewpoint few tourists rarely ever see.

“Why did I do this?” — during. “When can we do it again?” — after.

Type 3 Fun

Just... No

Not fun during. Not fun after. Awful during and miserable in retrospect.

This is what happens when things go seriously wrong. We actively avoid this territory.

“Never again.” — forever.

We specialize in Type 2 Fun — challenging enough to push your limits, rewarding enough to make incredible memories.

The best stories come from the hardest days on the trail.
